On Monday 6th November, Richard Burgon MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, came along to the Jerwood Space to meet with ex-prisoners taking part in our latest script writing course. The visit was facilitated by the Big Lottery, current funders of our training courses for prisoners and ex-prisoners.
Richard engaged with the class and spoke to ex-prisoners about their experiences on the course and how it has impacted them.
Richard Burgon MP, said: “What I saw was a real an example of how rehabilitation should work. If we are to make our communities safer then we have to ensure that those leaving prison are much less likely to re-offend. During my evening in the class I saw that the scheme gives people the skills that they will need to hold down jobs and stable lives. The current system of rehabilitation is broken which means that there is more re-offending and more victims of crime. I look forward to seeing how we can strengthen schemes like the Synergy Theatre when Labour is in government.”
We would like to thank Richard, Big Lottery and all of our course participants for making this evening so successful.
